Objectives To involve teachers in series of activities that seek to support teaching mathematics for able, gifted and talented students.
Description of material This workshop addresses the effective day to day provision for able, gifted and talented mathematicians in our schools. The workshop starts by looking at the definitions of able, gifted and talented. It then looks at different types of mathematical understanding and their place in the classroom. Teachers are then invited to consider their existing provision for able, gifted and talented students and categorise this provision into actions that support instrumental and relational understandings. Finally, teachers are invited to tackle a rich task and consider how this task supports day to day provision for able, gifted and talented students. The materials for departmental workshop include overview and a number of resource sheets. The departmental workshops have been written to provide school mathematics team with structured professional development to be delivered in-house utilising members’ expertise and knowledge. Materials could be used for self-guided learning too. Departmental workshops’ material was developed by National Centre for Exellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.
