Title Improving the learning environment

Objectives The aim of this workshop is to structure a team activity in auditing and improving the learning environment.
Description of material During the workshop teachers consider the impact of the learning environment on students in terms of displays, layout and technology. Teachers explore the following aspects in the workshop: what is the general environment around the department (but outside of the classrooms) like? Are displays used to foster learning / enthusiasm for mathematics? How the use of the electronic whiteboard enhance the learning of the lesson? This workshop requires teachers to prepare in advance: to create a plan of their classroom. The materials for departmental workshop include overview and a number of resource sheets. The departmental workshops have been written to provide school mathematics team with structured professional development to be delivered in-house utilising members’ expertise and knowledge. The activities in this workshop might prove to take a longer period of time than the normal 2 hours. The material is flexible and workshop leader can choose only certain activities to match with school priorities, or alternatively the workshop could be revisited over a longer period of time. Materials could be used for self-guided learning too. Departmental workshops’ material was developed by National Centre for Exellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.
