During the one week lasting Transnational Learning Activity on ‘Quality Criteria for Professional Development’ in May 2017 in Essen, Germany, four consortium partner institutions worked intensively on writing, discussing and further developing a ready-to-use-guide for professional development (PD) providers. This ready-to-use-guide will contain relevant criteria for high-quality STEM PD and address providers of PD programmes following two premises: providing applicability and initiating reflection.
During the meeting, the participating partners for example analysed videos of PD courses as a basis for the setting up of quality criteria and discussed and further developed the ready-to-use-guide. Both, plenary and group work sessions, allowed deep and fruitful discussions. Based on the discussions results, the content, the structure and the textualisation of the ready-to-use-guide was pre-finalized. The videos have been prepared by partners of the University of Essen and gave an insight into PD practice offered by the German Centre for Mathematics Education (DZLM). The partners identified and discussed relevant quality criteria by using an observation sheet. Moreover, best-practice examples illustrating specific quality criteria were finalized and integrated into the ready-to-use-guide.
In addition, an excursion regarding the role of engineering in the Ruhr region was conducted. This excursion focused on and illustrated various STEM-related disciplines, like e.g.: engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology.
Partners have been the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, the German Centre for Mathematics Education (DZLM) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (meeting host), as well as the Professional Development and Technology Institute at the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Education Development Centre from Lithuania.
