Objectives The aim of this unit is not to provide teachers with definitive answers about problem solving but rather to provide them with an opportunity to continue to develop the understanding and the answers that teachers already have.
Description of material During the workshop teachers consider how they can work with students so that students become better at solving problems. The workshop also addresses identified issues that have an impact on pupil progress in solving problems, considers a problem solving scenario, gives opportunities to compare this to solving mathematical problems in the classroom. During the workshop teachers disscuss additional strategies to use when working with students in the classroom. The materials for departmental workshop include overview, a number of resource sheets and links to supporting resources. The departmental workshops have been written to provide school mathematics team with structured professional development to be delivered in-house utilising members’ expertise and knowledge. Materials could be used for self-guided learning too.Development of this material has been co-ordinated by NCETM with contributions from AQA (Sandra Burns), Edexcel (Rob Summerson), OCR (Janet Sheaf) and WJEC (Betsan Jones).
