Planning and Implementing Progression for Science in the Classroom Training Materials

Objectives To demonstrate how key scientific ideas and the yearly teaching objectives can be used to aid planning for progression and to derive appropriate lesson objectives and to introduce a range of methods to check pupils’ progress part way through a unit.
Description of material The training unit focuses on clarifying progression in learning processes and how this might be reflected in the planning, implementing and evaluating of Science lessons or classroom activities. This unit includes follow-up work of two sorts: the first for the participant to develop their own teaching and the second to disseminate some of the ideas from the unit to colleagues in the department. The materials include: tutors notes (overview of the unit, unit objectives, outline programme, synopsis, preparing for the unit, resources needed for each session, summary of the key messages of the units, pre-unit task, follow-up work, evaluation forms), training slides for the session, participants resource pack (copies of the slides and handouts used in the training). All the materials were produced by the Department for Education, UK 2002.
